Chevy revives Trailblazer as 2021 small crossover
General Motors is resurrecting the Chevrolet Trailblazer as a small crossover, padding the U.S. lineup at its biggest division with another crossover as more Americans abandon the traditional sedan.
The 2021 Trailblazer will slot between the subcompact Chevrolet Trax and compact Chevrolet Equinox, the company said Wednesday. The vehicle, which was unveiled last month in China, will go on sale in the U.S. in early 2020.
The new Trailblazer takes heavy design cues from the Chevrolet Blazer, a familiar SUV nameplate GM revived last year as a midsize crossover. Like the 2019 Blazer, the Trailblazer will include an RS trim with standard two-tone roof.
GM last produced the Trailblazer for the U.S. with the 2009 model year. During the SUV craze of the early 2000s, TrailBlazer was a successful midsize SUV, offered in five- and seven-passenger versions.
Chevrolet discontinued the TrailBlazer in 2008 amid rising gasoline prices that combined with disappointing fuel economy. It was replaced by the Traverse.
“The Trailblazer’s great design enables more personalization,” Steve Majoros, director of Chevrolet passenger car and crossover marketing, said in a statement. “Trailblazer is a continuation of the design language for Chevy’s crossover family and extends our momentum into one of the industry’s fastest-growing segments.”
Chevrolet did not announce pricing and other specifications for the vehicle. A company spokesman also declined to provide additional information about the Trailblazer.
The Trailblazer is expected to be built on the same platform as the 2020 Buick Encore GX, which GM earlier Wednesday confirmed would arrive in U.S. showrooms in early 2020.
The compact Encore GX and 2021 Trailblazer will be imported from South Korea.

The Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 1LE is already a wicked performer, and is made only more so when equipped with its $7,500 Track Performance package. Now speed addicts can go even quicker around a track-or take it easier in traffic-with the addition of a 10-speed automatic transmission option on the 1LE. The 1LE retails for $72,195 with its six-speed manual, and it will run an additional $1,595 to swap in the new automatic when that version goes on sale in late February.
The ZL1 1LE packs a supercharged 6.2-liter V-8 engine with 650 horsepower and 650 lb-ft of torque. The new gearbox has its own 1LE-specific calibration, and the electronic limited-slip differential and performance traction-management system also get special tuning to work with the self-shifter, according to Chevy. Finally, the front and rear spool-valve dampers have been retuned to accommodate quicker weight transfers that occur with the automatic.
The new transmission was co-developed with Ford and appears in several products from both makers, including Ford’s F-150 and Mustang, GM’s full-size SUVs, and more.

The 2019 Chevrolet Blazer midsize SUV is poised to jump to the head of its class, thanks to great looks, a roomy and comfortable five-passenger interior and good performance. The new Blazer just started showing up in dealerships.
The Blazer’s handling and steering are responsive, making it feel like a smaller vehicle in heavy traffic. The ride is comfortable, and the cabin is quiet at highway speeds and over rough pavement.
The styling is unique, with narrow LED running lights, a sharp nose, fast windshield and roof and sculpted sides. It’s one of the few SUVs you’re likely to recognize 100 yards down the road.
Blazer prices start at $29,995 for a front-wheel drive model with a 193-horsepower 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine. The Blazer is expected to compete in a growing new segment of high-styled five-passenger midsize SUVs. It fits in the lineup between the compact Equinox and three-row Traverse.

The Blazer RS’s sporty handing and responsive handling should win over buyers who have been skeptical about switching to an SUV. It’s at least as much fun to drive as the front-wheel-drive midsize and large sedans automakers are abandoning in favor of SUVs.
The Blazer’s interior has the head and shoulder room of a large luxury sedan, and plenty of cargo space. The doors, dash – just about everywhere you touch – is wrapped in soft materials. Infotainment included a WiFi hotspot, wireless charging and an 8-inch touch screen.
