Chevrolet Truck

The next year has caused much controversy as the “battle of the pickup trucks” commences. Ford is expected to released their new F-150, GMC with their new Sierra and Chevrolet with their brand new 2019 Silverado.

Putting the fear into Ford’s F-150 camp is Chevrolet’s all-new 2019 Silverado which will meet and/or beat the F-150’s fuel economy, towing capacity and features without expensive aluminum.

Silverado is General Motors’ best-selling model and routinely the second best-selling vehicle in the United States. It’s also a fierce competitor for Ford’s signature vehicle, the F-150 pickup, the No. 1 seller.

But automakers are under pressure to boost gas mileage, which can lead to finding ways to lighten vehicles without sacrificing capability.

But Chevy used Ford’s switch to attack the F-150 in comparison ads, saying heavy, sharp objects would put holes through the aluminum truck bed while only denting the Silverado. Now, in again embracing steel for the new truck, that strategy is not likely to change with the new 2019 Silverado.

Right alongside efficiency and practicality is good looks, who can deny? The new Silverado was given a pair of narrow, high-mounted headlights that give it a more steely, squinty expression. The grille is big and bold, with a double black crossbar and smaller horizontal chrome bars. LED running lights reach down to indicators new the bottom of the grille. The rear bumper features inset steps for access to the bed and has “Chevrolet” stamped across it. Twin chrome tailpipes are inset in to the black rear bumper of the Z71 crew cab model.

GM says it surveyed more than 7,000 Chevy truck owners about features for the new model, which is expected to go on sale in the second half of 2018, so keep an eye out Jessup customers!

Chevy unveiled the 2019 Silverado at Texas Motor Speedway in Fort Worth at an event to celebrate the centennial of its first truck. “Our owners’ passion for Chevrolet trucks is truly humbling,” said Alan Batey president of GM North America, and global head of Chevrolet.

Cadillac CT6

Have you been anxiously awaiting which brand will take over the technology lead? The results are in and Cadillac is the winner.

The publication spoke with Cadillac President Johan de Nysschen, who said Cadillac will once again be GM’s darling brand for future electric powertrains and new technology, including self-driving tech.

“Cadillac in the future will be the technology lead brand for General Motors,” de Nysschen said. “Technologies will debut in Cadillac first and then cascade down to the other brands.”

Cadillac will soon be known as the luxury brand known for its technological prowess, if everything goes through correctly.

Developments on the self-driving car front will continue with the GM Cruise AV, based on the Chevy Bolt EV, but the learnings will find their way to production Cadillac cars first. Meanwhile, the Cruise AV will serve as GM’s ride-sharing autonomous car.

He said Cadillacs will always offer the luxury of choice between driving the car and letting the car do the driving. Cadillac is the only brand to offer true hands-free driving technology with Super Cruise.

Cadillac will reveal the first of a wave of new products at the 2018 New York Auto Show, the 2019 XT4 compact crossover. The CUV will be the first new Cadillac developed and launched under de Nyscchen as the brand looks to regain its footing in North America.

Buick Regal Sportback

The decision to do away with a sedan shape and offer the 2018 Buick Regal as a hatchback (called Sportback) and a wagon (called Tour X) is an odd one at first blush. After all, mid-size sedans traditionally have been among the strongest selling vehicles, while hatchbacks and especially wagons have seen little success.

But a funny thing has happened to sedans in the past couple of years. Sales of bread-and-butter mid-size sedans have fallen while crossovers have soared. Maybe it’s time to do something different. Maybe the 2018 Buick Regal Sportback is it.

At a glance, it’s hard to tell if the Regal Sportback is a sedan or a hatchback. And yet, the rear hatch opens in one piece. It’s basically a combination of a mid-size car and a crossover.

While the Regal Sportback is a hatch in the vein of the Audi A5 Sportback, BMW 3-Series GT, and Kia Stinger, it is bigger than those cars and offers more space in its cavernous hatch area.

Buick says it wants to explore white space in the market. We wouldn’t say a mid-size hatchback is something entirely new. After all, Audi, BMW, Kia, and Porsche all have hatchbacks that are take-offs on the traditional sedan shape. However, the Regal Sportback isn’t as premium as those cars, and it offers more interior space. Maybe that can win some buyers back to cars from the crossover craze.

Silverado 1500

Chevrolet has finally announced all the details on the all-new 2019 Silverado 1500 at Eastern Market ahead of the Detroit auto show.

“With the all-new Silverado, we’ve taken the best truck on the road and made it even better,” said Mark Reuss, General Motors executive vice president of Global Product Development, Purchasing and Supply Chain. “It has a longer wheelbase, more passenger and cargo volume, and yet, thanks to our mixed materials strategy and mass reduction expertise, the new truck is 450 pounds lighter than the current model.”

The Highlights

  • 450 pounds lighter than the outgoing model thanks to mixed-material construction
  • Frame-rail chassis and pickup bed remain steel while the hood, doors and tailgate are made form aluminum
  • Roll-formed (not stamped) high-strength bed with
  • The biggest box in its segment – width is up by seven inches, length is up one inch over the current model
  • More bed tie-downs for a total of 12

Updated Powertrain Lineup

  • Engines: the 5.3-liter V-8 and 6.2-liter V-8 get updated with what appears to be Dynamic Skip Fire technology aka Dynamic Fuel-Management, which can shut off up to 7 cylinders, depending on need
  • 3.0L Inline-6 Duramax turbo-diesel engine developed in-house
  • Transmission: Ford-GM 10-speed automatic transmission will be coupled to the 6.2L V-8 gasoline engine and the 3.0L I-6 turbo-diesel
  • Interesting feature: segment-first power tailgate that can be opened or closed by key fob, a button in the cabin or by hand
  • Interior has more interior legroom (3 inches more in the back seat of the Crew Cab)

Three New Trim Levels

  • Custom Trail Boss
  • RST (Rally Sport Truck), like on the Tahoe RST
  • LT Trail Boss (the one we saw back in Texas) with a blacked-out grille, two-inch suspension lift and Z71 off-road package, with a locking rear differential, skid plates and all-terrain tires

2018 Buick Enclave Avenir

Buick recently introduced the LaCrosse Avenir at the Los Angeles Auto Show and it appears a number of new Avenir models are on the horizon.

In an interview with Automotive News, Buick and GMC’s global vice president revealed “Avenir is the way we go toe-to-toe, I think, with some of these Tier 1 luxury brands” such as BMW and Mercedes. Duncan Aldred went on to say “You’ll see Avenir roll out across many more models and maybe the whole range over time.”

The Avenir sub-brand launched on the 2018 Enclave and the model features unique styling cues such as an exclusive mesh grille and 20-inch alloy wheels. The crossover also comes equipped with premium leather upholstery, heated / ventilated front seats, a wireless smartphone charger, and standard GPS navigation.

Aldred declined to say which model will receive the Avenir treatment next but the Regal is a leading candidate as the model was introduced last year and it is one of the company’s best-selling sedans in the United States. Other possible candidates include the popular Encore and Envision.
